Your 10-Point Spring Equipment Checklist: Get Ready for Planting Season

Spring is Here - Is Your Equipment Ready?

As temperatures rise and fields begin to dry, it's time to ensure your farm equipment is ready for the busy planting season ahead. Use this comprehensive 10-point checklist to prepare your machinery and avoid costly downtime when you need it most.

1. Inspect Hydraulic Systems

Check all hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and seals for leaks or wear. Replace any damaged components before they fail in the field. Don't forget to check hydraulic fluid levels and top off as needed.

2. Service Tillage Equipment

Examine disc blades, cultivator sweeps, and field cultivator components for wear. Replace worn disc blades (18", 20", 23" sizes) and sweeps to ensure proper soil preparation. Check disc bearings and hubs for smooth operation.

3. Prepare Planter Components

Inspect seed meters, disc openers, and closing wheels. Replace worn disc opener assemblies and check seed meter drive belts. Ensure proper spacing and alignment for accurate seed placement.

4. Check Tractor Fluids and Filters

Change engine oil, hydraulic fluid, and all filters. Inspect radiators and cooling systems - replace if showing signs of corrosion or leaks. Check antifreeze levels and concentration.

5. Inspect PTO Drivelines

Check all PTO shafts for proper lubrication, worn universal joints, and damaged shields. Replace any components showing wear to prevent breakdowns during critical operations.

6. Examine Wheels and Tires

Check tire pressure on all equipment. Inspect agricultural wheels (15", 16" sizes) for cracks or damage. Replace worn wheel bearings and ensure proper hub assembly.

7. Test Electrical Systems

Verify all lights, signals, and electronic controls are functioning. Check battery connections and charge levels. Replace any corroded terminals or weak batteries.

8. Lubricate All Grease Points

Grease all fittings on planters, tillage equipment, and implements. Pay special attention to pivot points, bearings, and chains that may have dried out over winter.

9. Inspect Chains, Belts, and Sprockets

Check drive chains for proper tension and wear. Replace stretched chains and worn sprockets. Inspect all belts for cracks, fraying, or glazing.

10. Stock Essential Replacement Parts

Keep critical spare parts on hand: disc blades, cultivator sweeps, hydraulic seals, bearings, hitch pins, and common fasteners. Having parts ready prevents costly delays during planting.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late

Completing this checklist now - before you're in the field - saves time, money, and stress during the critical planting window. Most of these maintenance tasks can be completed in a weekend, and the investment in replacement parts pays for itself by preventing breakdowns.
